Planning a trip is so much fun! A while back Spencer and I had a credit card that rewarded us with sky miles. Even though we had enough airline miles for two free tickets, we've been saving them so we could go somewhere fun. A few days ago Spencer and I were talking to my brother who lives in New York and it hit me that we should go there ... New York City. I checked the flights to see if they would be compatible with our miles and sure enough they were. All in all we paid a whoppin' $20 for airport taxes, yippee!!! The best part is .. NO kids!Since the idea first popped in my head I have been completely consumed by it. One of my downfalls is that I hyper focus. I can't stop planning what I want to do and how to spend our time. We will be there 6 days, but minus 2 days for travel and that leaves us 4 solid days. I would like to spend two full days in NYC, a day in Boston, and a day in Palmyra. My brother has graciously offered to be our personal tour guide, as well as opening up his house for our stay. Thank you Cory! Visiting the Manhattan and Palmyra Temple are a must on our list (or at least mine). Spencer's list will probably include something like Fenway Park or the Yankee Stadium. It's going to be hard narrowing down all the sights we want to see.
So I have a question for anyone who has ever been to the big apple. What places and/or attractions are a must for us to see?? Do you have any tips for us?
You guys are going to have SUCH a great time! I'm so happy for you! Palmyra will be a great stop - the sacred grove is an unforgettable experience.
ReplyDeleteIf I remember correctly, Cooperstown and the Baseball Hall of Fame is between NYC and Palmyra. And it is quite a drive (6 hours I think?) to get there. So hopefully you have a place to stay. There isn't much in Palmyra, but Syracuse is not too far and there are lots of options there. I went to highschool in Rome (about an hour east of Syracuse), so wave hello to my homies as you drive by exit 314!! Who is watching your kids for a week?
ReplyDeleteOkay. I was wrong. Mapquest has you come up to Palmyra from the south, so you miss Cooperstown. And Rome. So very sad. But you DO go through Syracuse. Bring lots of warm clothes. It can get COLD.
ReplyDeleteI haven't been there since I was 9 so I can't offer a lot of advice here! But I think your plan sounds great so far!!! What a fun vacation that will be :)
ReplyDeleteyou will have such a great time!! especially visiting palmyra and temples. when i went, my focus was a little more on going to some late shows and a show on broadway (not sure what's playing now), but those can be pricey too, i think. have a great time-- especially kid-free!!!
ReplyDeleteI've already put in ticket requests for the Late Show with Dave Letterman and the Daily Show with Jon Stewart. But I'm not holding my breath to actually get them.
ReplyDeletenicole i am so excited to hear you are coming out east to visit. if you come to boston please please please give us a call and we'll get together with you guys. we can show you all the fun things to do. let me know -k-

oh,how fun. Let's see, I used to live back east and if I were to go back I'd just walk around downtown NYC near 5th Avenue and around that famous outside skating rink. FAO Shwartz will be a great place to find something to bring back for your boys and to tell them about (the biggest toy store in the world, I think). You should see a Broadway play, definitely. Les Miserable is incredible and so is Phantom of the Opera- go buy yourself is you have to because there's nothing like seeing a Broadway play in NYC. Hmmm, and of course the empire state building and the Statue of Liberty, which are cool, and mostly just to say you've done it.
ReplyDeleteGood Luck-that's going to be so much fun!
I don't know if you know this but I went, back in 2001. I wanted to hit all the church sites and have the NY experience but it was a lot of travel time to upstate NY. So I ended up staying in the city the whole week I was there. Statue of Liberty was cool, it was actually open on the inside. Taking the subway everywhere was an experience. Then I went to Phantom of the Opera, Hit time square, Empire state building. The one place that I didn't get to go to, that I really wanted to was central park and rockerfeller center to do the ice skating thing. But I have heard that if you could get tickets to Wicked it is one of the best shows. But I hope you guys have fun. When are you going?
ReplyDeleteThat sounds so fun!
ReplyDeleteIf you go downtown where the theaters are at around noon, discounted tickets go on sell for that evenings plays. I haven't been there since I was a senior in high School so I don't remember the exact place but they are deeply discounted because they are same day tickets. Phantom is amazing.
