Eighteen months ago when Spencer and I were asked to put together a Pioneer Trek for the youth of our church I was honored and thought the Stake Presidency must like us and trust us enough to put together an event of that magnitude. Then about a week before, I started to wonder if it was because they didn't like us that we were asked. I say that jokingly, only because it was a lot of hard work and stress! But for whatever reason we were called, I am eternally grateful for the opportunity I had to be a part of such an amazing event.
My trek experience was quite a bit different from most of the other participants. I wasn't in charge of pushing and pulling a handcart like everyone else, nor was I assigned to a family that I was responsible for. The trek I experienced was far more personal! My hardship was trying to plan, organize and execute a positive experience for everyone involved. A lot of tears were shed throughout the process. Some out of frustration, but most were out of joy. In the end, however, I couldn't be more relieved to say that every ounce of effort proved to be worth it! The Spirit was so strong; The attitude so positive; And the unity absolutely amazing. What a reward it was!
I understand that Treks are meant to teach the youth about hardship, sacrifice and faith, but I too learned a valuable lesson as well. I know that hardship comes at different times in our lives and I don't think that life is meant to be easy, but we are all meant to have joy. That is what really hit me, we are all meant to have joy! I have no doubt in my mind that God wants us to be happy people. He doesn't give us hard times so he can watch us wallow in misery. He allows us to experience hurt and pain, stress and frustration, so that we can exercise our trust in Him. I feel the sweet rewards from that trust and I know that anyone who is willing to put their trust in Jesus Christ can and will feel that joy in their life too!
Beautifully said.....can't wait to see pictures =)

DeleteWonderful thoughts, Nicole. I can't even imagine how hard and stressful it would be to have something like this on your shoulders. I'm glad It was such a positive experience -- gives me goosebumps to think about what amazing feelings, testimonies, and memories come out of something like this. Good job!
