Sewing ... Just Isn't My Talent!

A couple months ago my Mom and Bill stayed the weekend with us, just for the fun of it. One of the goals that my Mom and I had while she was here, was to have her teach me how to sew. In college my Mom's dream was to be a clothes designer, but plans changed, and reality hit, once she started a family. I think she would have loved to pass that passion on to me, but sewing is one area that I never had any interest in. I'd rather just pay someone to make it for me! Anyway, while shopping at a fabric store one day with her, I found some nice fabric that I thought would make an adorable skirt. I decided to go ahead and give it a good ol' college try and bought all the supplies I needed to make a skirt. Directions on patterns are like foreign languages to me. I don't understand them at all! So I had to wait until my Mom could translate in order for me to start the project. Eventually, my dining room table was transformed into a sewing room and off we went, and .... I hated every minute of it!! I know to some people, sewing is truly the most simplistic thing to do, but to me it is the most time consuming, complicated hobby around. I did in fact create a skirt, but it did not turn out to be even close to a length I could wear. I guess I thought we were making a longer length skirt, but that just was not the case. My poor Mom was a good teacher, but I realized through the process, I don't enjoy it. It's just not one of my talents. Maybe how I feel about sewing, someone else feels about snowboarding (my passion). Who knows!?

  1. I enjoy the designing part a lot more than the sewing part. Cute skirt...too bad it was too short.

  2. Your last comparison is probably true . . . . Scott just asked me if I wanted to take a skiing lesson again and I said, no way! We all have our loves & hates. But at least you gave it a good try!
I think the skirt looks great, too bad about the length. In the photo it looks like a satin-y type fabric (maybe?) which could've been part of your frustration -- it can be really difficult to work with.

  3. I soooo hear you! I come from a family of sewers and that gift was NOT passed on to me. I keep having this hope that one day when all of my kids are in school, I will get to take the time to learn to sew, but I don't really know that I would enjoy it. Seriously, by the time you buy all of the supplies, it's just cheaper to buy the darn thing!

  4. At least you tried it before proclaming your disdain for it (unlike kids with food!). I can sew a straight line with my machine pretty well. Just enough to get by for making holiday table cloths for my kids to enjoy! The skirt was pretty cute. Just your style, a jazzy pattern but still classy.

  5. Good for you for trying! I must say, I love sewing, but never clothes(except aprons). I've never been able to get anything to look good enough to wear.

  6. Well at least you tried! I actually really like the skirt, so sad that it's not the right length though. A+ for effort :)
